The discovery by Venetian glass-makers of Crystalline glass revolutionised the art of mirror-making. This marked the beginning of large mirror plate production and the mirror ceased to be merely a bathroom trinket becoming a means of decoration hung on the wall like a painting. Venice's early dominance in this area resulted in many European glass houses developing imitations in the 'façon de Venise', Venetian mirror plate was valued then for being of greater transparency and less faulty.
Today, an authentic Venetian mirror continues to be made only exclusively in Murano and is prized for the craftsmanship which goes into the hand cutting, bevelling, engraving, painting, silvering and mounting to create the spectacular effects for which these mirrors are known.
